Aberri Eguna Message of the Lehendakari to Basques around the world:  "The future of Euskadi will be decided by Basques"

It is with pleasure and satisfaction that I am able to address all the Basques living outside of the homeland as we prepare to once again celebrate Aberri Eguna [Day of the Basque Homeland] this coming Sunday.

Aberri Eguna ("Day of the Basque Homeland") is celebrated in conjunction with Easter in large parts of the Basque world, especially those influenced by the Basque nationalist movement.  Click on Aberri Eguna for more information.

All of you are a fundamental part of our Basque community that across the years has lived through some hard times.  Nevertheless, you found ways to live lives of dignity and pride as a people of peace and diligence.  For that we owe you a warm embrace.

We now find ourselves in a time of hope and expectation, now that the way to peace seems possible [with ETA’s announcement of a permanent ceasefire].  This peace which we have so long sought to reclaim is now becoming a reality.  But this will not be an easy task, and it will require all our joint efforts:  of course those of us living in Euskadi but also you of the Diaspora as well.

As President of the Basque Government I wanted to relate my confidence in this process which we have now commenced, and ask of you that you be proactive in efforts to consolidate peace since it will be the Basque community that will decide our future.

I believe that we are living a special moment in history, as violence has been renounced and instead a dialogue has opened to stablize our society with a process that will resolve a political struggle that we have shouldered for over two centuries.

Euskadi is a mature society, that has demonstrated the capacity to respond to tough challenges, confronting adverse economic situations and emerging with  new industrial and technological solutions.  But most importantly, this is a country where no one ends up excluded based on progress in solidarity and equiminity.

Not so long ago the Basque economic future looked bleak, but a dramatic transformation yielding new high tech industries and technologies returned the Basques to prosperity.  This is perhaps most graphically illustrated by the transformation of the old industrial area of Bilbao.

This is the Euskadi that we seek and for which we strive.  We are a progressive society that is capable of making our own decisions without impediementes or beholding to others.  It will be the Basques that will decide the future of Basques.  We are one people and we have the right to decide our political destiny.

I hope that we will soon live in a new democratic era of dialogue that will respect the decisions we have made as the basis of our political future.

Pozgarria eta atsegingarria da niretzat munduko euskaldun guztioi mintzatu ahal izatea, aurten ere igande honetan ospatuko dugun Aberri Eguna dela eta.

Zuok guztiok munduko hainbat lekutan bizi arren gure herriaren funtsezko zatia zarete. Gure herriak historia gorabeheratsua izan du, une oso gogorrak bizi izan ditu, eta zuetako asko une horietako protagonista izan zarete. Baina hala ere, herri baketsu eta langile baten kide izatearen duintasunari eta harrotasunari eutsi diezue. Horregatik, besarkada maitekor eta beroena guztioi.

Itxaropen eta ilusio garaia bizi dugu; izan ere, badago bakea erdiestea. Herri honek denbora luzean irrikatutako eta aldarrikatutako bakeak egi bihurtzeko bideari ekin dio. Baina ez da zeregin samurra izango, guzti­guztion ahalegina beharko dugu. Hemen inor ez dago soberan eta horrelako erronka bati aurre egiteko guzti­guztiok ahalegindu beharko dugu, eta zuek ere bai, jakina.

Eusko Jaurlaritzaren lehendakaria naizen aldetik, adierazi nahi dizuet uste osoa dudala hasitako prozesu honetan, eta eskatu nahi dizuet bakea sendotzearen alde egin dezazuela lan, prozesu honen protagonista Euskal Herria baita eta etorkizunean ere Euskal Herria izango baita.

Halaber, uste dut une historikoa biziko dugula hemendik aurrera; izan ere, indarkeria desagertuta, garaia da normalizazio politikorako elkarrizketa prozesu bati ekiteko eta duela berrehun urte baino lehenago hasitako gatazka politikoari konponbidea bilatzen hasteko.

Euskadi herri heldua da, erakutsi du badakiela egoera zailak gainditzen, badakiela aurkako egoera ekonomikoei aurre egiten, eta badakiela berriro ere aireratzen industria eta ekonomia sare berriak sortuta. Baina batez ere, herria egituratuta, inor baztertu gabe eta gizarte aurrerapen zuzen eta solidarioan oinarrituta.

Euskadi horrelakoa izatea nahi dugu eta Euskadi horrelakoa izan dadin ari gara borrokan. Aurrera doan herria gara, gizarte heldua duena, erabaki ahal duena, inongo trabarik eta inoren babesik gabe. Euskaldun guztiok erabakiko dugu euskaldunon etorkizuna. Herri bat gara eta eskubidea dugu gure etorkizun politikoa erabakitzeko.

Espero dut laster biziko dugun garai berrian demokrazia, elkarrizketa eta hartzen ditugun erabakiak errespetatzea izango direla gure zeregin politikoaren ardatzak.

MENSAJE DEL LEHENDAKARI A LOS VASCOS DE TODO EL MUNDO CON MOTIVO DEL ABERRI EGUNA

EL FUTURO DE EUSKADI LO DECIDIREMOS TODOS LOS VASCOS

Es motivo de alegría y satisfacción poderme dirigir a todos los vascos del mundo con motivo del Aberri Eguna que un año más celebraremos este domingo.

Todos vosotros, que aún viviendo en diferentes lugares del planeta sois parte fundamental de este pueblo nuestro. Un pueblo que a lo largo de su azarosa historia ha vivido momentos muy duros, de los cuales muchos de vosotros habéis sido protagonistas. Pero aun así, habéis sabido mantener la dignidad y el orgullo de pertenecer a un pueblo pacífico y  trabajador. Por eso, el más sincero y caluroso abrazo a todos vosotros.

Vivimos tiempos de esperanza y de ilusión, ya que la paz es posible. Esa paz que durante tanto tiempo hemos anhelado, y que este pueblo tanto ha reclamado, ha iniciado el camino de convertirse en realidad. Pero no será tarea fácil, requerirá el esfuerzo de todos y todas. Aquí no sobra nadie y semejante reto requiere de todos y cada uno de nosotros, y por supuesto de vosotros también.

Como Lehendakari del Gobierno Vasco quiero transmitiros mi confianza en este proceso que se ha iniciado, y solicitar que seáis proactivos para la consolidación de la paz, ya que el protagonista de este proceso es y será el Pueblo Vasco.

Asimismo, creo que es un momento histórico el que vamos a vivir de ahora en adelante, porque desaparecida la violencia es el momento para iniciar un proceso de diálogo para la normalización política, un proceso que abra las vías de resolución de un conflicto de origen político que este país lleva arrastrando desde hace más de doscientos años.

Euskadi es un país adulto, que ha demostrado ser capaz de remontar situaciones difíciles, de hacer frente a situaciones económicas adversas, y de remontar el vuelo creando un nuevo tejido industrial y tecnológico. Pero sobre todo articulando un país en el que nadie quede excluido, basado en un progreso social ecuánime y solidario.

Esa es la Euskadi que queremos, y por la que luchamos. Somos un país en marcha, con una sociedad madura, capaz de decidir por si misma, sin impedimentos ni tutelajes. El futuro de los vascos y vascas, lo decidiremos todos los vascos. Somos un pueblo y tenemos derecho a decidir nuestro futuro político.

Espero que en esta nueva etapa que vamos a vivir, la democracia, el diálogo y el respeto a las decisiones que tomemos sean los ejes de nuestro quehacer político.
