The Bakersfield
Basque weekend stretched across parts of four days, beginning
with a Basque symposium featuring Basque authors and then
concluding with a farewell Basque breakfast. And in
between, there were plenty of more good times.

The Basque weekend started with a symposium featuring Basque
authors at California State University, Bakersfield. It
was coordinated by Steve Gamboa, Ph.D. of the Philosophy
Department there (who remembered to bring the Basque cheese for
snacks!). This is an ongoing series at CSUB.

Here local authors Steve Bass (L) and George Ansolabehere (R)
present their recently published work Basques in Kern County:
1870-1940.

Boise's Christine Echeverria Bender presented here written works
including here first novel of historical fiction The Whaler's
Forge.

Most folks conclude the Memorial Day Basque festival weekend
with a farewell Basque Breakfast at the Woolgrower's Restaurant,
featuring variations on pork items including "tripota."

Following the lunch music was played for dancing by the visiting
group Luhartza. They are from Bizkaia, and this was the
second time they played at the Bakersfield festivities.

There was still some gas in the tank Monday afternoon as the
dance floor was filled.
