BAZTAN:  Aunitz urtez!

The usual first dance to begin the "mutil dantzak" of Baztan is Aunitz Urtez.  The dancers come out to form a circle, and as they do so they greet the audience with the exclamation "Aunitz urtez" which translates as "for many years." Then second part is for each dancer to turn to the dancer behind as they exchange greetings.

< Our workshop (Nov. 2009) for the dances from the "mutil dantzak" of the Baztan region of Nafarroa was conducted by our visiting Basque country instructor Patxi Larralde who has developed a system for the teaching of these dances.  These workshops are sponsored by N.A.B.O. and hosted by various Basque clubs.

The front dancer turns to the dancer behind and places his beret atop his and says:
Aunitz
urtez: "For many years"

The back dancer then responds to the front dancer:
Bertze hainbertze!  "The same to you"
