After making the audience sing with them, Oskorri now wants them
to dance along.
The famed
Basque folk music group Oskorri--established three decades
ago--has recently put together a new musical project to promote
folk dance.

The dances are based on the work of Juan Ignacio Iztueta
(1767-1845), who was aware that much of the folk tradition was
being lost in the aftermath of the French Revolution in 1789.
He set about collecting the dances, and Oskorri has taken these
and presents them with the group Baztango Dantzariak, in a
simple format, "so they can be danced by the general public."
The tunes they have selected from Iztueta's collection of
Gipuzkoa traditional dance closely match the style of dances
from the Iparralde and the Baztan region of Nafarroa. In
collaboration with a group of dancers from Baztan, these dances
have been brought back to life. The group's aim is very
straight-forward: they want more people out there dancing
traditional Basque dance, so this is in no way a complext
folk recovery: it is simply getting more people out there to
dance together. Thus this project follows closely their
earlier project of the "Pub Ibiltaria" which includes over a
dozen albums with the aim of getting more people together to
sing.

A
related project is Oskorri's "Pub Ibiltaria" series of
albums that seeks to facilitate the singing of Basque
songs. The sets have two discs, one with the
complete songs and music, and the second just with the
music to sing-a-long to, as well as a booklet with
lyrics. These are all available for purchase.
One place to get them is at
www.elkar.com
or at various online sources like ITunes. |

To facilitate the learning of these dances Oskorri has made
available several videos posted on Youtube under the name of
Oskorri Dantzak, and also created the Dantza Oskorri Kluba. To
