HERRIA DANTZAN: "Everyone Dancing"

Let’s get more people dancing.  The more we dance together, the more fun we have.  The more fun we have, the more we enjoy Basque events.  The more we enjoy Basque events the more we'll choose to be Basque.  That is the objective of this N.A.B.O. dance project.

Basque dance can be divided into many different categories, the two major being social/recreational and ritual/religious.  The latter are usually reserved for groups that rehearse the complicated steps.  But it is the former category that makes for most of the dancing at a Basque festival when all can dance.  Basque dances as we know them in America were initiated by immigrant Basques that brought with them not only specific Basque dances (e.g., the fandango/jota) but also adopted forms of dance that include the waltz, polka, etc.  The problem is that many have not been able to learn these dances because our culture does not readily teach these types of social dances anymore. 

This proposed dance project will make available resources for people to learn these dances, so that they can take part in Basque social dances.  Here are some of the proposed dances:

These are dances for the Basque mass that opens most Basque-American festivals, that take place during the Offertory or Eucharistic prayer.  The three dances in this category include: Agurra (Erreberrentzia), Ezpata & Gorets. 

Talde dantza


 

These are performance dances for rehearsed groups (usually of eight or more) of dancers with costumes and pre-rehearsed repertoire to perform at various events. NABO has a separate set of resources for these dances that you can access at Euskal Dantzak
