IRAKATSI: Basque Educational Sources

Following our operative motto: Recreate + Educate = Perpetuate, the future of the Basque-American world will largely be decided by what is effectively communicated about the Basques.  Accordingly, there are multiple programs already in place, and several that are projected, that serve as viable means of educating people about the Basques.

NABO is involved in various educational endeavors, and it benefits from several members that are members.  There is real possibility that a
Basque Studies Consortium of educators & universities will be formed in the near future, and this bodes well for NABO and our membership.

NABO efforts for Basque youth up to the age of 15:

  • NABO is at work endeavoring to create a viable network of youth directors.  Over the next year we hope to continue efforts to recruit and support interested people that will be central to the efforts of club's keeping their youth informed and involved.

  • NABO's most successful endeavor to date is its annual Udaleku for kids ages 10-15 that offers them a two-week opportunity to learn more about their Basque heritage--and all the while have fun.

  • NABO is also actively promoting pilota and mus for youth.

NABO efforts for Basque young adults 16+
  • NABO is developing a new program for Basque young adults to compliment Udaleku.  The program is called Gaztealde and the first gathering in Boise was to establish a base from which to begin developing a fuller version for summer 2008.
  • NABO hopes to continue efforts to develop a network of youth directors in our various Basque clubs that will hopefully play a central role in keeping this age cohort informed and involved.
